What a Screenwriting Guru Can Teach You About Ditching the Sales PowerPoint
My friend Steve Kayser, a media relations director and prolific writer, recently shared a brilliant interview he conducted with Robert McKee, legendary guru of Hollywood storytelling and best-selling author of “STORY."
Steve posed the question to McKee: "Can the principles of his classic book “STORY” be used in the complex sales process?"
The answer was decidedly "yes."
The thought-provoking interview delves into the power of story in presentations, the impact of being honest and flawed in your story, and the importance of making story personal for the audience.
It even takes on the PowerPoint presentation.
"The PowerPoint presentation is easy, that’s why people do it," McKee says…."And when you come up with brilliant creative solutions to the presentation, the results for the people, for the audience, are stunning.
Check out the interview yourself, and be inspired to transcend traditional presentation props.
The First Book on Case Studies – Now Available!

Ten years ago this month, my phone rang.
On the other end was a client with a new project—a case study on one of the software company’s satisfied customers.
Admittedly, as a corporate freelance writer, I’d never heard of case studies—let alone knew how to approach one.
I searched the web, looked in bookstores, and asked around. Yet I couldn’t find any information on the "whys" or "hows" of customer case studies.
I forged ahead anyway, and in the process discovered a love for storytelling.
Over the past decade, that one project has led to hundreds more for dozens of companies.
Geico’s Real Customers
Many commercials use customer success stories, but Geico insurance has taken a creative twist the past few years. Instead of using just a real customer, or just a celebrity, they use both in tandem – creating a very engaging ad.
But are the ads effective in selling Geico insurance? If the purpose of customer stories is to create credibility, educate prospects and validate services, then do these ads work?
